USMS Percentile-based Motivational Times

USMS Percentile-based Motivational Times use season-best event rankings to assign each tier a percentile threshold, rather than a fixed offset from the National Qualifying Time. The cutoffs are derived from U.S. Masters Swimming season-best rankings by event, age group, and sex.

On this page, AAAA represents the top 2% of swimmers in each event and age group, AAA the top 6%, AA the top 8%, A the top 15%, BB the top 35%, and B the top 55%. Standards are available for Short Course Yards (SCY), Short Course Meters (SCM), and Long Course Meters (LCM).

What are USMS Percentile-based Motivational Times?

USMS Percentile-based Motivational Times define each achievement tier by a swimmer’s ranking within their age group, rather than by a fixed offset from the National Qualifying Time. The cutoffs are derived from U.S. Masters Swimming season-best event rankings.

What do the AAAA, AAA, AA, A, BB, and B tiers represent?

AAAA represents the top 2% of swimmers in the event and age group, AAA the top 6%, AA the top 8%, A the top 15%, BB the top 35%, and B the top 55%.

How are the percentile cutoffs calculated?

For each event, age group, and sex, U.S. Masters Swimming publishes a ranking of season-best times. Open Lane reads those rankings to determine the time at each percentile cutoff (top 2%, 6%, 8%, 15%, 35%, and 55%). The cutoffs on this page reflect the most recent published USMS season.

What do SCY, SCM, and LCM mean?

SCY is short course yards (25-yard pool). SCM is short course meters (25-meter pool). LCM is long course meters (50-meter pool). USMS publishes separate season-best rankings for each course.
