What Is a Swim Meet Psych Sheet?

A psych sheet is the list of swimmers entered in a swim meet, event by event, ordered by their seed times from fastest to slowest. It is published before the meet so swimmers, coaches, and fans can see who is entered, how the field lines up, and where a swimmer sits in their event and age group. It does not assign heats or lanes — that is the heat sheet.

What a psych sheet shows

For each event, a psych sheet lists every entered swimmer with the seed time they submitted, ranked fastest to slowest. In Masters swimming the list is broken out by age group, so you read your event, then your age group, then scan the order. The name "psych sheet" comes from the way seeing the competition ahead of time can psych a swimmer up or out.

A psych sheet answers three questions at a glance: who is entered in an event, how fast each of them is seeded, and roughly where a given swimmer will fall in the field. What it does not tell you is when or in which lane each swimmer races, because heats and lanes are assigned separately.

Psych sheet vs heat sheet

A psych sheet and a heat sheet are two different documents produced at different stages. The psych sheet comes first and simply ranks entries by seed time. The heat sheet, sometimes called the meet program or the heat and lane assignments, comes later and lays out exactly which heat and lane each swimmer is in and the order the heats will be swum.

In short, the psych sheet tells you who is in and how fast they are seeded; the heat sheet tells you where and when each swimmer actually races.

How seed times order the sheet

A seed time is the time a swimmer submits when entering an event, usually a recent best in that event and course. Seed times set the order on the psych sheet and, later, how swimmers are grouped into heats. A swimmer with no eligible time on record is entered as "NT" (no time) and appears unseeded, typically swimming in the earlier, slower heats.

Because seed times determine order, they are course-specific. A long course meters meet is seeded from long course meters times, not yards times, which is why a psych sheet for a summer meet lines up directly with long course results. To compare a time you swam in another course, convert it first with the Openlane Time Converter.

How to read a psych sheet

Find your event, then your age group, then read down the list: the fastest seed time is at the top and the slowest at the bottom. Your position in that list is your seed, an estimate of where you stand in the field before anyone races. Seeds are only a starting point, since swimmers can go faster or slower than the time they entered.

For a worked example, the Openlane 2026 USMS Summer Nationals psych sheet is interactive: it groups entries by event and age group across all five days, adds each swimmer’s long course meters Personal Best and best time in their current age group, and lets you search any swimmer to see every event they are entered in.

Frequently asked questions

What is a psych sheet in swimming?

A psych sheet is the pre-meet list of swimmers entered in each event, ranked by their seed times from fastest to slowest. In Masters swimming it is grouped by age group. It lets swimmers and coaches preview the field before the meet, but it does not assign heats or lanes.

What is the difference between a psych sheet and a heat sheet?

A psych sheet ranks entries by seed time and is published after entries close. A heat sheet, also called the meet program, assigns each swimmer to a specific heat and lane and comes closer to the meet. The psych sheet shows who is in and how fast; the heat sheet shows where and when they swim.

What does seed time mean on a psych sheet?

A seed time is the time a swimmer submits when entering an event, usually a recent best in that event and course. Seed times determine the order on the psych sheet and how swimmers are later grouped into heats.

What does NT mean on a psych sheet?

NT stands for "no time." It marks a swimmer who entered an event without an eligible time on record. NT swimmers are unseeded and usually placed in the earlier, slower heats.
